You may find yourself in situations where you are down on yourself because you’ve hurt people in our past, or even in your present. The enemy wants you to believe that you cannot be redeemed, that God will not forgive you for your mistakes. That’s the enemy’s trick. He wants to keep you separated from the Lord by keeping you in bondage to your own emotions. Keeping you feeling like you aren’t worthy of forgiveness because of the mistakes you’ve made. Don’t fall for this trick.
First, you have to forgive yourself. You have to tell yourself that regardless of what mistakes you have made in the past that God still love you, he is still on the throne. God isn’t looking at your past; he’s looking at your future. He sees you whole, restored, forgiven. All you have to do is ask for His forgiveness, and it shall be done. Hebrews 8:12 says, “For I will forgive their iniquities, and remember their sins no more.” That is the power of forgiveness. God not only “cancels” your wrongdoings, but he forgets them.
Don’t allow the enemy to keep bringing up your past, throwing it in your face. Once you’ve turned your past over to the Lord, he wipes away your sin and covers you. He forgives you and forgets your past mistakes. Isn’t that amazing. God’s ways are not like our ways. I heard people say, “I’ll forgive you, but I’ll never forget what you did to me.” Is that true forgiveness? No.
God isn’t looking to remember what you’ve done. If he went around focusing on your past, there would be no way he could bless your future. In the same way, we should forgive like this. When people do us wrong, we must forgive them. We cannot allow seeds of bitterness, hurt, and angry permeate our souls. We have to let it go; we have to cast that hurt from our memory.
