Romans 5:3 says, “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope.” Sometimes when we are in a rut and it seems like life is weighing heavy on our shoulders, we can get discouraged. It’s so easy to play the blame game with life and say, “Well, if this or that didn’t happen, I would be in a better position.” That is not the attitude to have in those circumstances. Do not allow life’s circumstances to make you become bitter and hateful or have anger in your heart. Instead, take those lessons as opportunities to be grateful for life and another change to get better. Like the scripture says, suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope. Perseverance means to persist in spite of difficulty. Perseverance builds character and strengthens your will power. There was once a young boy in foster care that was abused by his foster parents, both mentally and physically. His foster parents told him that he would never amount to anything in life. They called him dumb and stupid. They did everything in their power to break his will power. They wanted his mind to be in bondage as theirs was. Not only was he enduring mental and physical abuse, but his older step-sister was sexually abusing him. All those odds were stacked against him. He was in the valley and there seemed to be no way out.
Antwone Fisher’s will power was too strong to break. Through all of the abuse he endured from his foster family, all of the hateful words and physical attacks, he made it through. He joined the Navy, learned several languages, and became an honest and genuine man. He never let his circumstances break his hope for a better life. He turned his misfortunate situations into fuel to catapult him to a new level in life. His character was better than anyone he had grew up with. This is what set him apart from the rest and made him special. The message we can all learn from his story is to just have hope through it all. Hope keeps up fighting for what is right. It keeps us moving it the right direction. Hope is the reason we can push our shoulders back and lift our heads up.
In life, there will be storms. The storm could be health issues, relationship issues, or a tough decision that you have to make. The clouds of these difficulties are very dark and gray and they block the sun. In the storm, there is darkness and thunder. The rain may be coming down very hard and you do not see a way out. It may seem like the storm will never end. Maybe the storm has lasted for days or months, or even years. In the storm, there is depression and sadness. The important thing to remember is that on the other side of the storm clouds, the sun is shining bright. If we can just persevere through the storm, the light will come bursting through the clouds and all will be restored. The sun is always shining, even when a cloud is blocking its view, it is always in the background working in our favor. God is our sun. Yes, we all face difficulties in life. There is no escape around that. Our job is to focus on the sun. Remember that no storm lasts forever. Every storm shall pass. The sun is the one consistent source that will always be around. It will shine forever. The sun will always pierced through the darkness. The sun is our hope. We have to continue to believe in it, even when we cannot see it, but we know it is there; it always will be. So why let any storm stop you from hoping when we know the sun will always come out?
Keep on keeping on my friends! Remember the sun will always come out.
